Notes:
I hit 3,500 songs today with Jimi Hendrix's "Hear My Train A Comin'."  3,500 songs and I'm still in the early H songs...  Pretty impressive.
There was a really great run of stuff in a row today that I have to share:
  • "Havana Daydreamin'" by Jimmy Buffett
  • "Havana Moon" by Chuck Berry
  • "Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd
  • "Have a Good Time" by Paul Simon

Something tells me that I'm the first person to ever hear all of those in a row.  Just a guess, anyway...

Here are a few more favorites from today:
  • "Harmony" by Elton John
  • "Harper Valley P.T.A." by Jeanne C. Riley
  • "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young
  • "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

    • Live At The Gaslight 1962
    • The Rolling Thunder Revue
    • No Direction Home: The Soundtrack
    • Concert For Bangladesh
Notes:
I'm finally caught up after the Thanksgiving holiday...  I didn't even realize I had six versions of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and 41 minutes of the same singer singing the same song six different ways was actually kind of annoying, and I'm a big Dylan fan.
Some favorites from the day:
  • "Hammer to Fall" by Queen
  • "Handbags and Gladrags" by Rod Stewart
  • "Handle With Care" by The Traveling Wilburys
  • "Hannah" by Ray LaMontagne
  • "Happiness is a Warm Gun" by The Beatles
  • "Happy Jack" by The Who
I have to further note that it was nice to hear "Handle With Care" today, as well as a cut from The Concert for Bangladesh, since today was the ninth anniversary of the passing of George Harrison.  All things must pass...

Notes:
This entry was from last week.  I was on vacation the rest of Thanksgiving week and didn't get a chance to update.
I finished the G's and started the H's last Monday.  One very appropriate track was "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" by Dee Dee Sharp, since Thanksgiving was approaching.  It inspired me to create a Thanksgiving playlist which turned out to be rather interesting.

    • Eric Clapton
    • Huey Lewis & The News
Notes
Today ended up being a lot shorter than it should have been, as I was distracted and pulled away from my desk quite often.
The highlights were definitely among the great parts of today.  The four versions of "Going Down Slow" were all unique in fantastic ways, and I found out that I don't have the most recognized version of the song by Howlin' Wolf.  I'm not a big fan of Huey Lewis' version too much, as the tempo of the song doesn't really match up with the overall mood of the song.
I have two more days of work before Thanksgiving, and I'm not sure if I'll make it out of the G's or not.  Stay tuned!

Notes:
Today ended up as a shorter day as I took 90 minutes to listen to Howard Stern interview Billy Joel from yesterday's show.  I'm not a Stern fan, but that was a fantastic interview.  Find it.  Thanks go to my brother for sending it to me.

    • Let it Be
    • Let it Be...  Naked
    • Past Masters Volume 2
Notes:
I passed the 3,000 song mark today, as well as moved out of the F's and into the G's.
There was a great moment today when "Funny How Love Can Be" by The Ivy League came on.  I had probably heard that song on radio several times throughout my life, but never really knew what it was.  I certainly didn't know that I had the song.  Once again, I can thank this project for showing me good stuff I never knew I had.
Appropriate that the day The Beatles finally appear on iTunes that I get four versions of "Get Back," but I also heard "Getting Better" from Sgt. Pepper.  I think you can only download two versions of "Get Back" from iTunes...  Though I didn't bother to really look to see if they had the Anthology series or Let it Be...  Naked available for purchase.  I already have everything on CD.  I don't need it again.
More personal favorites from today:
  • "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers
  • "The Game of Love" by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders
  • "Garden Party" by Rick Nelson
  • "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles
  • "Get a Job" by The Silhouettes
  • "Get it Right the First Time" by Billy Joel
  • "Ghost in this House" by Alison Krauss
  • "The Ghost of Tom Joad" by Bruce Springsteen
  • "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" by Johnny Cash
Today was a really good music day,

  • Um, because it's "Free Bird."

  • Two versions of "From Four Until Late"
    • Robert Johnson from Complete Recordings
    • Cream from Fresh Cream (title was "Four Until Late")
Notes:
First, for those of you actually paying attention, I made a mistake back on 10/19/10, when I failed to update the day to 21, skewing all the days since then.  So if you notice that Day 36 disappeared, it was actually Friday, 11/12/10.  Hopefully I don't screw that up again.
There is actually a studio version of "Fourth Time Around" by Bob Dylan from Blonde on Blonde, but it didn't play today because the title is written as "4th Time Around," which I'll get to at the end when all the titles that start with numerical digits occur, according to iTunes.
Also, the Johnny Cash & Sam Cooke songs above are pretty much the same song, though not totally the same.  The refrain is the same, as well as most of the verse lyrics.  The title is the only real difference.
I got to hear all 11:10 of "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" today, which then led into the closing song, "Funk #49."  It was a great way to close out a pretty busy Monday.

Follow Four Fools Forever

Day 35  11/12/10 - 86 songs
First song 9:01AM:  "Follow" by Brandi Carlile from the self-titled album Brandi Carlile
Last song 5:51PM:  "Four Sticks" by Led Zeppelin from Led Zeppelin IV (ZOSO)

Highlights:
  • Studio & live versions of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues"
  • Two versions of "For Once In My Life"
    • Gladys Knight & The Pips
    • Stevie Wonder
  • Three versions of The Beatles' "Fool On the Hill"
    • Magical Mystery Tour (studio version)
    • Demo & Take 4 from Anthology 2
Notes:
I was too busy on Friday evening to update, and then I forgot until now.
Friday was a solid mix of great music.  The bulk of the day could be a "highlight," really.  There was a great mix of artists, genres, and sounds.  There weren't a lot of covers and/or alternate versions of songs either.  It really was just a great listening day.
Personal favorites:
  • "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash (both versions)
  • "Fool's Paradise" by Buddy Holly
  • "Fools on Parade" by The Jayhawks
  • "For No One" by The Beatles

    • Cat Stevens
    • Rod Stewart
  • Three versions of "Five Long Years"
    • B.B. King
    • Buddy Guy
    • Eric Clapton
Notes:
I forgot to send the song info from yesterday to myself at home, so I'm updating yesterday now, and I'll update today a bit later (once the day is over).
Pretty good day of music yesterday...  I did have to endure "Fernando" by ABBA, and I further question why I even have ABBA in my collection.
I accidentially listened to the same song twice yesterday, and this was the first time I did that without catching myself.  "Find the Cost of Freedom" by CSNY was played back to back on two different collections.  Oh well...
Finishing the day on "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" was great fun.  No one was around in the office, so I cranked up that banjo and yee-hawed the rest of the day away.

    • "Fat Albert's Car"
    • "Fat Albert Got a Hernia"
    • "Fat Albert Plays Dead"
  • Three versions of "Feelin' Alright"
    • Joe Cocker
    • Traffic
    • Gladys Knight & The Pips
Notes
I finished up the last E song today and started the F's off with Otis Redding's "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)."  A fine start.
I found the three versions of "Feelin' Alright" to be rather interesting.  While Traffic's version is more straightforward, Joe Cocker's has the piano riff at the start which adds to the uniqueness of his version.  Gladys Knight's version is basically a cover of his cover.
There were some great "Fat" songs today (aside from Fat Albert):
  • "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen
  • "The Fat Man" by Fats Domino
  • "Fat Man in the Bathtub" by Little Feat
I also got to crank up "Feel Like a Number" by Bob Seger, because it's a perfect anthem for sitting as a nameless cog in a giant corporate machine.
There was also some great instrumental guitar today:
  • Three by John Williams (no relation to the Star Wars composer), all from Spanish Guitar Music
    • "Fandango"
    • "Fandanguillo, Op. 36"
    • "Fantasia"
  • Immediately following "Fantasia" was "Fantasia Suite" by Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucia from Friday Night in San Francisco.
More F's tomorrow...

Every Evil Eye

Day 32  11/9/10 - 73 songs
First song 9:40AM:  "Every Mother's Son" by Traffic from John Barleycorn Must Die
Last song 5:56PM:  "Eyesight to the Blind" by Eric Clapton from Tommy soundtrack (The Who)

Highlights:
  • 27 "Everybody" songs
  • Two versions of "Everyday is Like Sunday"
    • 10,000 Maniacs from Campfire Songs
    • The Pretenders from Boys on the Side soundtrack
  • Two versions of "Evil (Is Going On)"
    • Howlin' Wolf
    • Eric Clapton (Derek & the Dominos)
  • Three versions of "Eyesight to the Blind"
    • B.B. King
    • The Larks
    • Eric Clapton (from the Tommy soundtrack)
Notes:
I'm one song away from finishing out the E's.  I just couldn't stay at work any longer tonight to hear the last one, so I'll finish them off tomorrow.  E turned out to be a pretty short letter.  My guess is that Q and Z will probably be the shortest.  Hard to tell until we get there...
I had a great power ballad moment back to back this morning, mostly thanks to a spelling error.  "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison led into "(Everything I Do) I Do it For You" by Bryan Adams.  Everything was actually spelled "Every Thing" on my iTunes, so it had the song in the wrong place.  That happened yesterday and today as well with a studio & live version of "Everyday is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow.  The studio version was spelled "Every Day..." and as a result, they were not played back to back, nor mentioned as a highlight.  Oh well...
Best song of the day was "Excitable Boy" by Warren Zevon.  It's a great song about murder, rape, and caging up a loved one.
Onto the F's tomorrow!

Notes
Today I broke 2,500 songs...  Still in the E's as well, but, as long as there's time, I should get the E's finished up tomorrow.
There were a few great songs that I must mention after today, which makes this project all the more fun.  Songs I forgot I had, really enjoyed, or that simply get overlooked too much due to too much shuffle:
  • "End of the World" by Herman's Hermits
  • "The End" by The Doors
  • "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes
  • "Eternal Circle" by Bob Dylan
  • "Every Little Thing" by The Beatles

Notes
I merged yesterday and today for a couple reasons.  Mostly, I just ran out of time to update last night, and I wanted to close the D's out, but that didn't happen until today.  The other reason was the fact that I only got through 46 songs on Thursday, and one of those was the 38:44 "Drugs and Kittens I'll Drink to That" from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones that had a hidden track, featuring over 30 minutes of silence.  Very exciting to actually listen to nothing.  As a result, there wasn't much to highlight or comment on.
Not to be outdone, today I had "Echoes" by Pink Floyd from Meddle, which is 23:28.  At least there was some amount of sound for the full amount.  Strangely, it was followed by "Eclipse" from Dark Side of the Moon, which made for an interesting transition.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Ebony and Ivory" today.  I didn't even know I had it until it came on.  Great to hear that again.
D statistics coming soon!

Notes:
I got through all the "Downs" today and started in with the "Dreams."  My hope of finishing up the D's tomorrow will have to wait until Thursday, as I'm taking tomorrow off, but it won't be from staying up all night watching election coverage.
My first song finally appeared today.  "Down the Road" from my EP Ah, Semplice was in the "Downs."  The next one won't appear until the H's...  If you don't have a copy of my record, let me know.  We'll arrange something.
There were a couple great tunes today that I must make mention of:
  • "Double Shot of my Baby's Love" by The Swingin' Medallions
  • "Down in the Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal
  • "Down With Disease" by Phish
  • "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)" by Roy Orbison
Because of those and others, today was a solid, although somewhat short day.  See you Thursday!

 Notes
Finally closed out the "Don't" songs today.  There were 131 unique ones.  So far, that's probably the record (I'm too lazy to go back and actually look).  My guess is that songs that start with the actual word "I" will probably win.
Seven songs into today I heard "Don't Hit Me No More" by Mable John, which has some great lyrics:
I'm so sorry you had to slap me
'Cause you never done that before
But I'm so glad that man made a pass at me
I used to wonder if you loved me
Now that I know
Don't you hit me no more
Go download it.

Tomorrow we're going "Down" and we may get out of the D's.

  • 37 "Don't" songs (and counting...)

  • 23:17 of Pink Floyd back-to-back
    • "Dogs" from Animals - 17:08
    • "The Dogs of War" from A Momentary Lapse of Reason - 6:09
Notes:
I forgot to update the blog on Friday afternoon...  But it was Friday and I had stuff to do.
The "Don't" songs are in full swing.  I should get through them on Monday, and likely wrap the D's up by Wednesday at the latest.
Had the classic Blue Öyster Cult "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" toward the end of the day.  A fantastic way to start Halloween weekend.  "You're gonna want that cowbell..."
