Day 25  10/28/10 - 83 songs
First song 8:20AM:  "Dirge" by Bob Dylan from Planet Waves

    • Same song
      • The Contours

    • Chuck Berry
  • Two rather nonsensical titles (but great songs) back-to-back:
    • "Do Wacka Do" by Roger Miller
    • "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann
Notes
I took yesterday off to listen to some CDs at work.  My brother gave me the "new" Dylan set - The Witmark Demos, which also came with a bonus disc of "Bobby" Dylan (it was announced that way on the recording) live at Brandeis University from 1963.  Tickets to that show were $4.40.
43 of 83 songs started with "Do." Tomorrow I'll get into the "Don't" songs, and that may run all day and even into Monday.
Got to hear three different opinions on Jackson Browne's "Doctor, My Eyes" today:
  • Doctor Rhythm by the Dave Clark 5
  • Doctor Robert by The Beatles
  • Doctor Wu by Steely Dan
I think I'd go see Doctor Robert, given the choice.
Onto the "Don'ts" tomorrow!

    • Bobby Vee
    • The Clovers
Notes:
I made it past the 2,000 song mark today, closing the day with 2,022 songs.  So I'm still not 1/6 through the library yet (not including skips & holiday songs).
The last song of the day was appropriate for Halloween, but it was pretty terrible.  I really think some box sets are just crammed full of garbage. Another great Halloween song was played today.  "Desperation Samba (Halloween in Tijuana)" by Jimmy Buffett.  Since Halloween is on a Sunday this year, I'm glad I got a couple songs so close to the holiday.
There were also eight "Diamond"songs, which closed with "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" by Paul Simon.
The D's have been pretty fantastic so far.  Hopefully I get some good stuff tomorrow as well...  Because it's my birthday!

  • Two versions of "Darling Be Home Soon"
    • The Lovin' Spoonful
    • Joe Cocker
  • Two versions of "Day Tripper"

    • Two from Traffic
      • Heaven is in Your Mind (studio)
      • Welcome to the Canteen (live)
    • Crosby, Stills, & Nash from Carry On
Notes:
Aside from "Darling Be Home Soon," there were two additional Lovin' Spoonful songs played today.  Both "Darlin' Companion" and "Daydream" ran today, so three total Lovin' Spoonful songs for the day.  Good stuff.
Starting the day out with "DangerZone" was great.  Seemed to be perfect for a Monday.  The highlight of the day, however, was "Day-O" by Harry Belafonte.  It's hard hear that and not sing along and smile.  Absoultely perfect for a Monday.
The absolute perfect song for today was "Dead End Job" by The Police:

I don't want no dead end job
I don't wanna be no number
The queue gets longer everyday
I just ain't no time to stay
I ain't gonna run away
All I want to do is play

That's Monday back at my desk...

  • Four versions of "Dancing in the Street"
    • Martha & the Vandellas
    • The Mamas and the Papas
    • Van Halen
    • David Bowie & Mick Jagger
Notes:
Farewell to the C's...
Out of the four versions of "Dancing in the Street," the only one worth listening to is the original by Martha and the Vandellas.  The other three are all horrible for one reason or another.
There were a few songs today that shared the same title but were completely different songs:
  • "Crush"
    • Dave Matthews Band
    • Jennifer Paige
  • "Cry"
    •  Same song:
      • Johnny Ray & the Four Lads
      • Ray Charles
    • Roxette
  • "Cryin'"
    • Aerosmith
    • Eric Clapton
  • "Dallas"
    • Alan Jackson
    • Jimmy Buffett
  • "Dance, Dance, Dance"
    • The Beach Boys
    • Steve Miller Band
I had to get through another ABBA song today.  Thankfully "Dancing Queen" will only be stuck in my head all weekend.  Painful.
The D's started off pretty strong with "D'yer Maker" by Led Zeppelin...  So far, so good for the D's.
Have a great weekend!

Notes:
I ended up not listening to anything yesterday due to training at work and a mid-day ALCS game, so finishing the C's will have to wait until tomorrow.
I was unaware that I had eight unique versions of "Crossroads."  I knew there was a lot, but not eight.  That may be the record, but we'll have to wait and see how many versions of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" come up when I get to the K's.
21 "Crazy" songs took up a lot of the day, but it was a pretty solid day all around.
On to the D's tomorrow!

    • Rod Stewart from Reason To Believe: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings
  • Two versions of "Cool Jerk"
    • The Capitols from Atlantic Rhythm and Blues box set
    • The Go-Gos from Greatest Hits
Notes
Short day today due to the NLCS game, but still a good day of music.  I didn't even realize that Rod Stewart recorded "Country Comfort."  Surprises like that are making this project even more fun.  I also haven't listened to the White Album in a while, and hearing "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" today reminded me that I need to listen to it again soon.  Perhaps this weekend...
Short day again tomorrow - ALCS at 1:00PST and I'm doing some training at work, so I'm not too sure how much listening time I'll actually get in.  As a result, I may or may not get the C's wrapped up tomorrow.

 Notes:
Today is the 20th day of my A to Z, and as of today I have listened to 1,602 songs.  Of the 110 songs I heard today, exactly half of them (55) started with "come."  It started with "Come a Little Bit Closer" by Jay & the Americans and ended with "Comes a Time" by Neil Young.
There was an additional "Cloud 9" by George Harrison as well as the one above, but it was titled with the digit 9, as well as being a completely different song.
I also got to hear the classic "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners.  Fantastic.
Short day tomorrow for NLCS Game 3...

First song 8:25AM:  "Chapel of Love" by Darlene Love from Phil Spector: Back To Mono
Last song 4:46PM:  "Cliches" by Jimmy Buffett from Havana Daydreamin'

Highlights:
  • Four Versions of "Chimes of Freedom"
    • Bob Dylan
      • Another Side of Bob Dylan
      • No Direction Home (live)
    • Bruce Springsteen
    • The Byrds
  • Rod Stewart singing two "Cindy" songs back-to-back
    • "Cindy's Lament" from Reason To Believe: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings
    • "Cindy Incidentally" from The Best Of Faces: Good Boys When They're Asleep
  • Seven "Circle" songs
  • Three name songs back-to-back-to-back
    • "Christie Lee" by Billy Joel
    • "Christine's Tune" by The Flying Burrito Brothers
    • "Chuck E's in Love" by Rickie Lee Jones
Notes:
Lost a day yesterday due to a vet visit yesterday, but all seems well with the puppy.
Pretty decent day...  Not a lot of covers/alternate versions of songs, which seems to be a bit of a trend with the C's.
Two more name songs today, including the five above:
  • "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters
  • "Claudette" by the Everly Brothers
Had to get through another ABBA song...  Chiquitita.  Ugh.  At least it was followed by "Chitlins Con Carne" by Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Be back Monday!

Changing Castle Chains

Day 18  10/13/10 - 102 songs
First song 8:23AM:  "Caravan" by Van Morrison from The Band's The Last Waltz
Last song 4:54PM:  "Chantilly Lace" by the Big Bopper from Loud, Fast & Out Of Control : The Wild Sounds Of '50s Rock

I'm breaking format today because although there were a couple studio & live versions, they really weren't all that memorable.  A prime example being "A Change Would Do You Good" by Sheryl Crow.  I did get two versions of "Change It" by Stevie Ray Vaughan - one from Soul to Soul, the other from Live Alive, and that was really the only "highlight" as I've had them listed previously.
I closed yesterday with the studio version of "Caravan," and opened the day with both versions from The Last Waltz.  Van Morrison has been coming up quite a bit lately, it seems.
There were a few like titles that weren't covers that were interesting today:
  • "Carnival"
    • Eric Clapton from No Reason to Cry
    • Natalie Merchant from Tigerlily
  • "Catapult"
    • Counting Crows from Recovering the Satellites
    • REM from Murmur
  • "Chains of Love"
    • Erasure from Modern Rock - 1988-1989
    • Joe Turner from Atlantic Rhythm and Blues
  • "Chances Are"
    • Bob Seger & Martina McBride from Bob Seger's Greatest Hits Vol 2
    • Johnny Mathis from Sony Soundtrack For A Century
    • Bob Marley & the Wailers from Fy-Ah, Fy-Ah
  • "Changes"
    • Black Sabbath from Greatest Hits
    • David Bowie from Best of Bowie
The biggest standout for odd songs today was hearing John Fogerty's "Centerfield" followed by "Centerfold" by J. Geils Band.

Captain Can't Call Candy

Day 17:  10/12/10 - 80 songs
First song 8:11AM:  "Call on Me" by Chicago from Very Best Of...
Last song 5:50PM:  "Caravan" by Van Morrison from Moondance

Highlights:
  • Cantina Band 1 & 2 from the Star Wars soundtrack.  Awesome.
  • Studio & Live versions:
    • "Calling Elvis" by Dire Straits
    • "Can You See Me" by Jimi Hendrix
    • "Candy's Room" by Bruce Springsteen
  • Two versions of "Can't Find My Way Home"
    • Acoustic version from Eric Clapton's Crossroads box set
    • Electric version from Steve Winwood's Finer Things box set
Notes:
I was going to update this last night, but I neglected to e-mail all of the song data to myself...
Both today and yesterday concluded with Van Morrison songs - what does it mean???
Although I didn't include it above, "Can't Help Falling in Love" played twice today.  Once by Elvis, and the other by UB40.  I can't consider UB40's version a highlight.
To wrap up, again, "Cantina Band" simply made the day.  Han shot first.  May the Force be with you.

Bye-Bye, B! Call Me!

Day 16:  10/11/10 - 87 songs
First song 8:14AM:  "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones from Sticky Fingers
Last song 4:16PM:  "Call Me Up in Dreamland" by Van Morrison from His Band and The Street Choir

Highlights:
  • Two versions of "Busted"
    • Johnny Cash
    • Ray Charles
  • Two versions of "Bye Bye Love"
    • Everly Brothers
    • Simon & Garfunkel
  • Three versions of "Caldonia"
    • Two by B.B. King
    • Muddy Waters - from The Band's Last Waltz
Notes:
The B's are history...  Started the C's off with "C'est La Vie" by Bob Seger.  I'll hear the original version of this when I get to the Y's (in April, maybe?) when I hear "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry.
Also got to hear the great track "Brownsville Girl" by Bob Dylan, where he mostly talks, but it's a great story.
Heard some great blues artists today as well:  B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, Janis Joplin, T-Bone Walker, & Jimi Hendrix...
I'm in the middle of the "call" songs now...

B Statistics

Bring Broken Brothers Brown Breakfast

Day 15:  10/8/10 - 63 songs
First song 8:11AM:  "Breakfast in America" by Supertramp from Best Of...
Last song 3:02PM:  "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" by Chuck Berry from Anthology

Highlights:
  • Three versions of "Bring it on Home to Me"
    • Sam Cooke
    • The Animals
    • Rod Stewart
  • Four "Brooklyn" songs
    • Jesse Malin (2 versions)
    • Steely Dan
    • Neil Diamond - "Brooklyn Roads"
  • Two versions of "Brown Eyed Girl"
    • Van Morrison
    • Jimmy Buffett
  • Two versions of "Brown Eyed Handsome Man"
    • Buddy Holly
    • Chuck Berry
  • 13 "Bring" songs
Notes:
A very odd back to back coupling from the morning started the day off.  "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest followed by "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" by Neil Sedaka has, likely, never been played in succession.
Additionally, I really doubt that Neil Diamond's "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" has ever been followed by "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" by Bing Crosby.  Either way, those made for some interesting listening.
The B's should be finished up on Monday (barring the MLB playoffs, anyway)...  Then it's on to the C's!
Have a great weekend!

      • Please Please Me
    • The Shirelles
    • Peter Best
  • Three versions of "Breakdown" by Tom Petty
    • True Confessions (Live)
    • Pack Up the Plantation (Live)
    • Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Notes:
Short day today due to the MLB playoffs...  The one standout item was "Boys," mostly from a music trivia standpoint.  Ringo sang the Beatles version, and there was another version by Peter Best, who Ringo replaced as the drummer for the Beatles.
Another short day tomorrow because of baseball...

    • Taj Mahal
  • Two versions of "Border Song"
    • Elton John
    • Eric Clapton
Notes:
I only got through 72 songs today as I was away from my desk quite a bit today.  It was a good day for multiple versions and covers, as you can see above.  There were a few others aside from all of those as well.
The best run of the day started with all three versions of "Boom Boom" and then went into:
  • "Boom, Like That" by Mark Knopfler
  • "Boot-Leg" by Booker T & the MGs
  • "Boot Hill" by Stevie Ray Vaughan
Tomorrow is the beginning of the MLB playoffs, so listening time will be limited...  But I'll keep this blog up to date as I listen!

    • Carl Perkins
    • Elvis Presley
  • Two Queen songs back to back
    • Body Language

Notes:
Today marks the first day I broke 100 songs.
The most interesting thing I heard today was "Blue Train" by John Coltrane followed by "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton.
I owe and Elvis fans an apology, because I heard both Elvis' and Carl Perkins doing "Blue Suede Shoes" today, and Carl Perkins' version is far better.
I heard 53 songs today that started with the letters "blue" - which includes all "blues" songs, and also wrapped up the last nine "black" songs.
The end of the day was represented by some great guitarists:
  • Brian May from Queen - Bohemian Rhapsony
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan - Boilermaker
  • Jimi Hendrix - Bold as Love
  • Joe Walsh - The Bomber
Also, I'd like to say hello to my first three followers!  Thanks for reading!

  • 27 "Black" songs...  and counting
Notes:
Some really great songs today.  Some of my favorites being "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin, "Big Rock Candy Mountain" by Harry McClintock, "Bitch" by the Rolling Stones, and even though it's technically not a song, "Bill Visits Ray Charles" by Bill Cosby.  "Ray, why are you shaving in the dark with the lights off???"
Also, I had a pretty great run in the "black" songs that I'd actually go back and listen to again:
  • "Black Cat Bone" by Johnny Winter from Progressive Blues Experiment
  • "Black Country Woman" by Led Zeppelin from Physical Graffiti
  • "Black Cowboys" by Bruce Springsteen from Devils & Dust
  • "Black Crow Blues" by Bob Dylan from Another Side of Bob Dylan
  • "Black Crows" by Honeyhoney from First Rodeo
  • "Black Diamond Bay" by Bob Dylan from Desire
  • "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin from Led Zeppelin IV (ZOSO)
  • "Black Friday" by Steely Day from Greatest Hits
And if you don't know who Honeyhoney is, check out First Rodeo.  You'll thank me.

Notes:
Half day yesterday, so the amount of songs was cut down dramatically.  Some good stuff in such a short period, including a great Bob Seger tune I had forgotten about, "Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight."  Also, I hadn't heard Tina Turner's "The Best" in a while.  Great song.  Update for today's songs is coming soon!
